About 1 week ago my 4 year old sustained a kick to the point of his shoulder. Directly after the kick he took a few lame steps but after feeding walked out with no lameness, we started aggressive cold therapy for about 5 days, I did not give him bute (which I should have upon retrospect) and did not put him on stall rest as he did not appear lame (and is very high strung and will spin in his stall/kick out ect. if confined for longer than usual). A week later he still has a focal area of swelling right over the site of the kick, the wound has healed over nicely. He does not appear lame at walk/trot/canter, he is not tender over the swollen area, and he appears to have sensation as he responded immediately when I applied topical DMSO yesterday. I can not tell if there is atrophy as of yet but am concerned that the swelling is still so prominant, it is only slightly warmer than any other area on his body. I am planning on taking him to the vet this weekend. When should I expect the swelling to go down? Does this sound like a shoulder sweeny in the making? Thank you!

Hello Susanne,
Not necessarily but we have no easy way to measure the amount of damage done to the scapularis nerves. If inflammation (swelling and heat) remains a problem NSAIDs continue to be indicated.
