Hi - I am considering buying this horse as a trail horse. He will be WTC'ing 5-6 miles, 5 days a week. This is a QH that I suspect has quite a bit of halter horse blood. He appeared sound and has decent sized feet and pastern angles.
The whole RF leg seems to turn out a little bit, he may be a little back at the knee, but that may just be an illusion because of his extra large forearms. And he has knarly looking knees. There is one obvious swelling on the outside top of the knee. Any ideas or opinions? If I go forward with the purchase he will be vetted. I don't need another lawn ornament.
Thanks!

Diane, it looks like an enlarged extensor tendon, is it firm? A healed extensor injury should have a good prognosis for remaining sound but I would be interested in how old it is and how it was thought to occur, particularly if blunt trauma to the knee occurred as there may be more serious other problems.

Thanks DrO!
The bump is not hard. Could this be caused by conformation? His knees seemed short, wide and "ripply" (don't know a better wat to describe the face of the knees.) Maybe I am used to my warmblood's knees - they seem longer and flatter....

Barbara, I remain uncertain what the bump is. Ok it is not hard so what does it feel like?

Hi DrO -
I probably didn't answer succintly above. The bump is firm but not hard: it did not feel like bone or calcification. I hope that is more helpful.
Thank you,
Barbara

An enlarged carpal extensor would feel firm, see earlier post for more.
