HI Dr. O,
Eight days ago my 5 yr old gelding had a piece of stick or thorn, pretty thick, stuck in his foreleg just above the fetlock. It was in about a 1/8-1/4 inch and when I pulled it out there was no bleeding. The fetlock and just above were swollen. It was probably in there for a day and a half from a trail ride the previous day. He was slightly lame but was better the next day. I've been exercising(walk/trot) him every afternoon, running cold water on it after exercising and the swelling goes down but it's back the next day. He does not appear to show any lameness and there's just a little heat. Vet said to keep doing what I'm doing. Would wrapping help? The swelling seems the same every morning. He's in pasture 24/7.
Thanks for your help.

Cece,

Are you sure that you got all of the stick/thorn out? I'd wrap it just to help keep the tissue from permanent damage from the swelling, but only if you were positive that all of the foreign object had been removed.

Good Luck!

Chris,

I couldn't find the hole after I pulled it out but then I didn't have my glasses with me. I found one little area that had a small scab but it was minor, no pus. I've put Icthamal there a few times in case there was something to come out.

Thanks for your help.

Yes Cecelia, wrapping could reduce the swelling with a properly applied pressure bandage or neoprene ankle boot. See the article for more on pressure bandaging. The lack of worsening suggests no foreign body or growing infection is there but this needs to continue to be monitored.
