Dr O, I previously posted about a strangles outbreak on my farm. my vet has recommended I vaccinate all nonsick horses with the intranasal vaccine, and I am doing that.

My question concerns a 2.5 month old foal who has been exposed to the sick mare. In fact, I am now presuming her dam has strangles, tho she does not have all the clinical signs (she has some swelling in the lymph node area, but no fever and very little nasal discharge). I read in your article that strangles vaccination should start at 4 months of age.

Can/should the 2.5 month old be vaccinated? I forgot to ask my vet about this, but would want a second opinion anyway. The foal is not weaned, but is showing no clinical signs of strangles.

THANK YOU.

Yes the vaccine can be given to one so young the problem is the immunity the foal got from the mare may inactivate the vaccine.
