Dr O. Two of the three foals that were born here this year were born with dime size sarcoid tumors. One, just above her flank and the other on her ankle. At the time they were born I had wondered what the connection was, but was waiting till they got older to have them removed. I just read a brief article on The Horse.com about it. I didn't realize they were caused by a virus which lies latent in circulating blood cells of the mares. It is the first time I have seen this and these mares have had many foals. Can you shine any light on this subject? And is there a drug I can give the mares so it does not keep passing to their foals? As always thank you, Marcia

Hello Marcia, To learn more about sarcoids, bovine papilloma virus, and latency see Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Bumps / Nodules / Warts / Tumors » Sarcoid. I am not aware of congenital sarcoids in horses and believe your veterinarian has a possible publishable paper if that is what these are. I have never seen a case neither can I find a published paper on a case. How sure are you these are sarcoids? Do any of these mares have sarcoids? If these are sarcoids there are no known drugs that would be a benefit during pregnancy and would suggest any sarcoids the mares have be treated prior to becoming pregnant again. DrO
