Hi Dr O. My horse had a severe case of hives last summer lasting 4 months which I posted extensively about above in my thread Hives and Dex Dosage. This summer he has been free of hives so far. Several days ago I noticed a localized reaction of small bumps on one side of his face which went away with some cold-hosing. Today he had them on one side of his neck and down the shoulder. They don't look like hives (yet) but small papules or pimples. Both days he was turned out for several hours and it's quite hot here with plentiful flies.

If not for his history I would think this was not a big deal but the outbreak last year started very innocuously also.

Is it better to try to nip this in the bud and get him on some medication or should I see if it progresses, if it is just a mild reaction or gets worse? What's the best way given his history?

Susanne,
They sound like pretty typical reactions to horsefly bites that any horse can have. For more on taking care of this see Horse Care » Routine Horse Care » Controlling Houseflies and Biting Flies.
