Dr. O:
How long can a horse safely be given pred acetate DrOps for REU? My horse has been on it (2 to start then 1 DrOp per day) since the beginning of July for a outbreak of uveitis. He was weaned off cyclosporine and atropine several weeks ago. Should I try to cut him back to every other day? This outbreak is very much under control now. Thanks!

We don't know the answer to this question SueB. We do know such treatment causes a rise in systemic exogenous glucocorticoid so has the potential for adrenal suppression. But there are no reported cases of eye DrOp induced Cushings or Addisons. If the problem is well under control you should talk to your veterinarian about trying every other day treatment but this is a decision that should be made by your veterinarian. For more on signs of adverse effects from steroid use see, Treatments and Medications for Horses » Anti-inflammatories (NSAID's, Steroids, Arthritis Rx) » Steroids, Overview of Antiinflammatory Use.
