Hi! In the past 3 weeks our 7yo Oldenburg has developed a perfectly round golfball size, rock hard mass on his crest about 6 inches from his poll. You can actually see it protruding from his crest. The top of his crest is slightly crusted at this site, but no fluids/drainage have ever been apparent and the hairs in his mane are gone (about 3/4") on this specific spot. The mass doesn't move under the skin. He is not tender to the touch. He had an allergic reaction to new pine shavings 3-4 weeks ago & broke out in hives all over his body -- his neck too. They have since healed but this new mass is now very evident and we're not sure what to do. He is ridden every day and it's not affecting his behavior or performance. But we're concerned.

Welcome kah2008,
There are so many possibilities at this time that there is no point listing them. What does the mass look like? Is it under the skin? If so what needs to be done is have the mass defined and possibly biopsied. Ultrasound will define the extent and make up of the mass and either aspiration or punch biopsy will define what it is made of.

My mare has a lump similar to this on her crest that the vets I've had look at it all say they think it's just a fat pocket. Just a thought.
