There are now several cases of pigeon fever not too far away and they are warning that this means next year could be worse! So in light of that I've got a million ???? . Read the articles here and wonder if since it is bacterial in nature what about hyDrOgen peroxide in water? Already use fly predators, fly spray and pick up twice a day. Know that there is only support care if caught but would rather prohibit it as much as I can! Next year they also warn WN will be much worse, Oh Joy!

Hello Cindy,
What about HP and water Cindy? What do you want to do with it? Have you read the articles in HA on keeping fly populations and mosquitos low?

Yes I've read every article here and elsewhere. The ?? was prompted by my 85 year old father in law whose dad was a horse training way back when and he thought that is what they put in water for horses with PF. So I had to ask.My husband races pigeons and they use clorox in drinking water to kill bacterial infections then followed by probiotics. Like I said with both WN and PF coming my way I would like to have as much resolved as I can. Thank you

No I don't think HP in the horse's drinking water will be helpful.

Hi Cindy,

I live in Larimer County Colorado, which is typically hard-hit by WNV. Vaccination seems by far the most effective and cost-effective strategy for WNV. I haven't had pigeon fever on my ranch (yet), but I think that focusing on drinking water isn't likely to be your best bet for that either.

If you are concerned about mosquitoes breeding in the water, there are strategies to mitigate that problem w/o adding H2O2.

Elizabeth, thank you. My horses have been getting WN shots since there were shots but til last year we were free of it. As for pigeon fever it is very new here and quite literally on the other side of the hills! My father-in- law has some interesting ideas from long ago and always try to check them out one never knows. He told me about honey for wound care long before it made "new" news! I always want to learn as much as I can Thank You again!
