my 4 yr old is also infected with rain rot . she itiches her body all the time weither it is her belly or her tail. she developed scabs lately.called the vet and he put her on sterio.her back is very tender,i did shampoo her with idine soap. but not al lot.will do that tomorrow but the problem is it is winter and a foot of snow.her skin is very dry so is there anything i con put her on to get more oil in her skin.

Welcome Julia,
From your description it is not clear you are dealing with rain rot. Occasionally horses become pruritic (itchy) with dermatophilus but it is not common. Are the scabs consistent with the appearance of the scabs in the article on rain rot? Or does it seem the horse is itching to the point he is rubbing the hair off and then damaging the skin?

If this is dermatophilus I would not try to moisturize the skin as moisture promotes the spread of the disease.
