Discussion on Recurrent Uveitis - Cyclosporine Implant or Rapamycin Injection?

I recently asked if anyone had experience with the cyclosporin implant surgery - I ended up not getting that procedure and opted for a new drug that is still in research mode, but there have been approximately 20 horses in the US and many more in Europe (evidently Europe has been doing this for quite some time) and the outcomes are comparable to the cyclosporin implant. This procedure does not require general anesthesia, but does require sedation. They called it intravitreous rapamycin injection. They basically injected the drug into the back of the eye. The hope is that this will last two to three years with no recurrent episodes. (fingers crossed) We had the one month follow up on Monday (January 12, 2009) and the doctor was pleased with the outcome. She feels the retina has smoothed out and my horse is showing some vision response for sure. Yeehaw! Praise God!
Post procedure care meant treating his eye with DrOps and ointments 2 to 4 times per day and we tapered off to where there is no medicating now unless he has an episode. This procedure was about half the price of the implant too.
