Both of my horses have suddenly developed ulcers turning to crusty thick scabs in their nodes.Pasterns are affected too----hair comes out when pulled, with a dart shape (almost like ringworm ) .Temperatures are normal, but both are lethargic.
i think this is possibly an allergy to wood shavings/ These come from a well known supplier, guaranteed dust free. But was unobtainable for some months-----Supplier said they had difficulty getting wood from previous source DUE TO DECREASE IN WOOD SUPPLIES FROM BUILDING TRADE!.I am worried they are now using a new wood source and this is giving the possible allergy.I also have a new supply of hay, from my usual hay-dealer. DR. O, is nose and pastern ulcers indicative of allergy?

Not necessarily an allergy but it could also be a direct irritation: what type shavings are they. If you feel this is the cause you should remove them. The description is also suggestive of a skin infection like Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Hair and Coat Problems / Itching / Irritated Skin » Rain Rot and Rain Scald: Dermatophilus.
