Have an 8 year gelding that was kicked in the side of his head about a year ago and has since developed a snotty nostril on that side of his head. His teeth were floated in September and the vet didn't see anything. Would an injury to his teeth take that long to surface? It is thick and yellow and shows up under any physical activity.

Janet, I would lean more toward a damaged sinus cavity from the kick. Being thick and yellow, it sounds like an infection, which works like this: Kicked in the sinus causing either swelling or some other damage preventing the sinus from draining properly, therefore the normal sinus fluid stays put instead of draining. Your horses immune system sees the fluid as a threat and sends white blood cells' leukocytes(spelling?) to attack this fluid, resulting in the thick yellow discharge. Just a theory, but a logical one. Being so long ago, it may not even be related, and the infection could be from normal allergies with the swelling "stopping up" the sinuses and triggering the same immune response. As for the teeth? I would think it was unrelated, but I could be wrong on that part of it. Hope this helps just a little. Dr. o will be sure to set my theory straight, because I am sure I left something out.

Hello Janet,
Yes it could take a year but as Jessie says they may not be related. The article discusses how to go about diagnosing this. As the tooth roots are embedded in the bones overlying the sinuses it is difficult to separate them out on a rule out list.
