My yearling stud colt caught his leg in the fence and has a floating bone chip 1x3cm which is producing profound lameness. Would like to hear from anyone who has experienced this. My vet wants to wait for 1 month to see if it reattaches and if not, surgery to remove. She thinks he will be sound again in time. What can I expect? Any comments please?

Where is the bone chip? I think a lot depends on where the chip is. If it's right next to the bone and not displaced, then I'd think it might re-attach, but I'm not a vet. I've known of horses having a small bone chip that never caused problems, and of one that had a very small chip that reabsorbed. Without seeing x-rays I don't think anyone could tell you much. If it's floating and away from the bone then my instinct would be that it needs to be removed. Dr.O. should have some more educated comments for you.

thanks Sara. The bone chip is just 2 milimeters away from the canon bone so she is hoping it will reattach. she is bringing the xrays next week so we can look at them together.

Welcome nand,
Not only is the distance of the chip from the cannon important but the part of the cannon bone that is chipped and the shape of the tip. Do you have any more details on the nature of this chip and how long has this been going on so far?

The two concerns that determine whether you will have problems are, is the piece stable and not moving and does the piece have enough blood supply to prevent necrosis.

Thanks Dr O., I will see the x-rays on wednesday. This injury is just 2 weeks old. My vet will x-ray again in a few weeks. I think there is also a bad bone bruise as well. nand
