A "friend of a friend" says he used a product called "Founder Free" for a foundering horse and swears by it. I am very skeptical of these kinds of products. It's made by TLC Animal Nutrition in Pennsylvania. The analysis is calcium .45%, phosphorus .25%, potassium .17% and sodium .04%. It's described as "nutritional support for foundered horses" that results in "an almost immediate reduction in the pain and heat associated with founder" . It's to be given once or twice an hour for the first four hours then continue several times daily until recovery is noted. The price is: $88.00 for 1 quart, which provides 65 servings. So, has anyone else used this product with good results? With or without the usual treatment of banamine or bute, which would seem to accomplish the same thing as this product?

I don't see how calcium, phosphorus and potassium would help a foundered horse. There are some products that will help build up and strengthen poor hoof wall; they contain lots of biotin and vitamins. Actually, depending on what your horse is eating I guess, I'd be a little concerned about the calcium phosphorus ratio in total diet if you were feeding very much of this stuff. There are some good natural herbal remedies that help with pain and inflamation, but I don't know if they are any easier on the stomach than bute. I've used bute and have never had a problem. If you are concerned about high doses over a long period of time you can feed gastroguard as a preventative. Of course, I'm no vet or equine nutritionist.

Hi Prarie, People with sore, foundered horses will try to find anything to help them...I KNOW that, I browsed supplements and anything else that could stop this soreness and make my horse sound.

Unfortunately there is NO such supplement, wish there was.

The best chance your horse has to be sound is

#1 read all the articles in here relating to founder.

#2 Make sure her diet is correct, and she is not overweight and her carbs low, SOMETIMES this initself makes a GREAT difference. Especially since you said her founder was caused by eating too much and getting fat...if I recall

#3 Patience, Patience, Patience. Something I lack myself! They do not get over founder overnight, healing has to take place and that takes awhile, Once you are through the acute stage.

#4 a good farrier can work wonders sometimes, but I see from your other post that is not possible at this time.

Hope your girl feels better soon

Agreed, I see no rationale for this product to work and I cannot find anything but the vaguest of references to this product on the TLC site. There is an equally irrational topical product also named "Founder Free" made by Markie's Choice.
