my horse had a huge painful swelling on the side of his neck last night. I believe it was due to hitting the corner of his out building. I'm 99% sure that is what has happened as he gets up on that side all the time (I'm the one w/ the arthiritic horse that sometimes has trouble gettin up after laying down). Anyways, I administered 1/2 gram bute last night. The swelling has increased to the lower part of this neck this AM. I gave him banamine today and going out to ice it right now. He is eating fine and his attitude is normal. It is painful for him to the touch and there is heat associated with it, it is soft inside. Does anyone else have any recommendations? My plan of action right now is to continue with bute and ice it. thanks!

Your treatment sounds good. Sometimes, I use DMSO in that kind of injury to get the swelling down. You must use it carefully, but it generally works well with swelling. I don't know what the latest studies are, but Dr.O can guide you better.

Danielle, my chief concern is that this may be an abscess instead of a seroma from trauma, you should take his temperature to see if there is fever. If there is fever you should have your veterinarian out. For trauma your treatment seems appropriate though you should check you bute dosage against the tube or "Phenylbutazone" article on this site. If this does not respond quickly you should consider another call to your veterinarian.
