My horse has a SCC tumor below his rectum and is about 1-1.5 inches on the exterior. My worry is the interior seems to be approximately 2"x6" and depth unknown. The vet want to surgically remove the tumor by cutting all off it out; including skin and I am not sure of this treatment. Are there an injection type therapies that is less invasive?

Welcome Jeff,
Though there are non-surgical treatments recommended in the article large lesions are best treated by surgical excision. Be sure you don't confuse the prognosis of sarcoids and SSC and surgery. For SCC and good size tumors surgery is almost always your best option. Does your veterinarian not believe he can close the wound following excision?

If you want a better idea of the extent of the lesion you might consider ultrasound.

I have attached the pathologist's report. Can you offer any further discussion on the risk for the cancer spreading internally or any further description of the cancer itself? It is difficult for me to understand and our vet did not provide an explanation of the pathology.

Hello Jeff, we are missing the attachment: is it an unusual format or bigger thean 64k? If not give it a try again. If it is can you cut and paste it into a txt document?
