On Wednesday night we found our 8 year old Morgan gelding standing with his back right leg up. He did not want to place it down and he appeared to be sweating, but further examination proved that he was just wet on one side. I ascertained that he had fallen and did an assessment of his leg and found no warm spots, edemas, etc...I placed a halter on him and took him out of the pasture and placed him in his own paddock. He will not move unless I halter and walk him. He just stands in one spot until I halter and walk him. The next day he has a fluid like sack form about the size of a baseball at the top of his inner right leg and it progressed over the next day along his abdomin to extend past his flank. So it is summer sausage shaped, It is warm to the touch and he does not want me touching it. He is thrashing his head today and I am at a loss as to how to help him. He is eating, drinks very little and his kidneys and bowels are working. Could he have pulled his groin? The swelling is not getting any bigger in the last 2 days, he presents no sign of fever.

Welcome 3 morgans,
I do not like the sound of "he is thrashing his head". To help your horse you need to get your veterinarian out today to figure out what is going on with your horse and then decide what is the best treatment.

To help you assess this problem I would like to know what the horse's vital signs are, the nature of the lameness, and how severe the lameness is when he is moved. For more on this see:
1) Diseases of Horses » First Aid » Taking Temperature, Pulse, and Respiration
2) Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Localizing Lameness in the Horse

Had a vet check and pulse, respiration and temp okay. 4 grams of Bute given and horse is much happier. Trauma injury. My assumption was correct and it only cost me $240. :-)

The BUTE worked great! His personality is back, still has a bit of an edema, but he is being his sweet self and curios about everything in his paddock.
