My 10 year old standardbred mare is in foal and she was diagnosed with DJD about 3 years ago. She is lame one day with a major head bob when she walks and then appears only minor lame the next day. I'd like to hear what would be helpful for her and safe for the foal.

Welcome Heather,
There has been little research on the safety of many drugs and nutraceuticals used in the treatment of arthritis so we do not have any recommendations that are known safe.

With the exception of the NSAID and steroid recommendations in the article Arthritis and DJD: An Overview there seems to be little reason to believe the other recommended local and systemic treatments would cause harm. Steroids are considered contraindicated during pregnancy. With careful use of NSAID's most of us think the risk is small to the foal and you will find a subtopic in the article on phenylbutazone that discusses this see Treatments and Medications for Horses » Anti-inflammatories (NSAID's, Steroids, Arthritis Rx) » Phenylbutazone (Bute).
