If a yearling filly had a small umbilical hernia (defect admits the tip of one finger) would that filly be safe to breed from when she was older or would she need surgery to close up the hernia first? And if she did have surgery would it then be safe to use her as a broodmare or is an umbilical hernia a contraindication to breeding from a filly?

I ought to add I'm not too worried about umbilical hernias being genetic. I'm more concerned about the possibility of the hernia getting bigger from the weight of carrying a foal. Is this a risk? Many thanks for any answers.

Hello michelle, While the hernia's size seems safe there is a small chance the hernia could enlarge with the extra weight and stress of carrying a foal. It all depends on the strength of the tissues making up the linea around the hernia. An ultrasound might help define the thickness and therefore the strength of these tissues but there is little work on this. Yes surgery to correct the hernia would reduce the chance this would occur. I have never seen any work to clarify the genetic possibility of a hernia being hereditary and we often think there may be mechanical trauma at the time of birth as a cause of some hernias. DrO
