Posted on Saturday, Nov 13, 2010 - 1:50 pm:

I just bought a15 year old horse with COPD for my 9 yr old son Who practices jumping (85-90 cm) four times weekly.
I was told by the previous owner about his condition and the vet said that it is manageable.
He coughs three to four times during practice and breathes with a little difficulty afterwards. Its stall is very well ventilated with open window at all times and vents to fresh air above. I was told by the previous owner not to administer any medication since he gets better on his own. And only to give him his medication when breathing difficulty increases
The horse has had COPD for as long as 8 years and has won many jumping championships since.
So is what we are doing enough and is it ok to ride him even though he coughs and his nose DrOols only once after exercise and has some difficulty breathing after exercise? Or should he b e given medication on daily basis. I also heard aloe vera helps, but have no clue as to how to administer it!
Hope I made thing clear.
