Does anyone know the recommended amount of Karo (corn) Syrup to help out a N/H horse.

I've read and heard multiple times that not only can it be given to help an episode, but can also be given daily to help maintain balance. I just can't find the dosage at the moment so thought I'd ask here.

Also, if anyone knows if it makes a difference whether light syrup or dark syrup?

Interesting article:

The only reference to the amount of Karo to administer that I could find said to give 90 ccs when an attack starts (quivering skin/mild colic symptoms).

I don't know much about this fascinating subject and am not entirely sure that this is what you are asking about.

Hi Vicki, I appreciate the article. I didn't know that Triple Crown had low potassium products, I think lower than what I'm feeding now, so good to know!

And yeah, supposedly you can give them daily doses of Karo in place of the prescribed diuretic, so that's what I'm looking for. I may just start with an ounce poured on his food, maybe. We'll see if the doc knows.

Hey guys,
Reviewing this article I realize that this is a very old version. The current article on HYPP can be found at HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Muscle & Tendon Diseases » HYPP, Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis. As soon as I know you have seen this referral I will move this discussion to the proper article and fix this link.

Our article recommends Karo for mild attacks and if we calculate the IV dose of glucose for severe attacks it does come to 100 ccs / 1100 lbs.

I have just updated the HYPP article again to make it more complete. Let me know what you think.
