My Thoroughbred mare recently (2 weeks ago) developed a cluster of 6-7 hard lumps on her back, just behind her withers to one side of her spine. They are not very painful, but she seems to bothered when I canter her under saddle - I assume because of the saddle rubbing on them? She hollows out and "runs away". I live in northern BC, Canada and the temperature has been sub zero for months, so no bugs for sure. I ride her for about an hour most days, but as it is very cold she very very rarely sweats under the saddle. She is turned out 24/7 and she is blanketed. Any ideas as to what it could be?? Or what I could do about it?

Hello Elizabeth,
Unfortunately there are dozens of causes of hard lumps on horses. But with a thorough description we may be able to narrow down the possibilities. The article associated with this discussion tells you what information is helpful. From what you have put down so far you should check out the Cutaneous Amyloidosis link in this same article under the Other Causes subtopic.

I would also recommend the fact that you have multiple instances of rapidly growing bumps that seem painful, I would get my veterinarian involved sooner rather than later. Painfulness is an unusual feature of common skin bumps.
