My new, oldish mare has some mild lower ringbone in both fronts and begining lolipops on xrays. I think she does have heel pain, as she points and the hoof is smaller than the other. She will be getting shod according to her xrays. Also joint injections.
As far as medications...I read your article that Equioxx is better for inflammation but bute is better for pain control...Can you mix them? Say for a 1500 lb horse can you give 3/4 of a dose of equioxx and then 1/2 gram of bute...at the same time? Or ...is it better to give the equioxx as a daily and then when going for the occasional hack give bute for that day instead?
My goals are to slow the DJD as much as possible, and get an occasional pain free ride in.
Thank youDrO :-)
ps) I read all 3 articles, djd, ringbone, nsaid.

Hello lara,
Mixing NSAID's as you suggest is not a good idea as the toxicity and efficacy of such mixtures is unknown. When dealing with chronic pain you will be better off in the long run choosing the lesser toxic drug firocoxib if cost is not a concern. If it is try to find the lowest dose bute that keeps your horse as comfortable as possible.
