recently my 10 year old warmblood gelding has had very rapid muscle loss in the left side of his chest. No soreness or lameness, over the summer he did have an abscess in his neck from a tracheal wash. He was given large doses of antibiotics for this and it was finally open and drained.

What could be causing this muscle loss.

Hello TMPF,
Causes for focal muscle atrophy includes:
Disuse
Trauma
Loss of motor nerve stimulation

Was this muscle used for antibiotic injection?

I'm not sure about the injection sites, when he was sent home from the Marion Dupont Scott Equine Medical Center in Leesburg he was on oral medication but I know that they were giving him injectables while he was there.

Its been 4 months since he was sent home from there and this recent development could still be caused by an antibiotic injection?

If so what type of treatments would you use?

If this or some other trauma has caused the problem treatment might be best done with antiinflammatories. However, at 4 months post trauma it probably will not be helpful. More important at this time would be a accurate diagnosis so instead I would recommend considering a muscle biopsy of the atrophing muscle belly.
