I've read the article on narcolepsy and he doesn't quite fit. He is seemingly healthy, well filled out 4 year old gelding who gets DrOwsy just about anyplace, anytime. Yes, he DrOwses while being groomed, but also when being ridden, in the arena or in the pasture. He has always been very calm, very laid back, but as we've been training him this summer, he seems to be getting increasingly DrOwsy. We'll be riding in the arena and his eyes DrOop, and we'll give him a cue, and he seems to startle awake. This morning in the pasture, one of the dogs moved near him (he's completely desensitized to them), and he startled. My riding companion said he seemed to have startled awake.
Should I have any blood work done? Someone suggested giving him electrolytes, but I hesitate to give him anything until I know what is going on with him. He gets plenty of rest. He does not lay down more than usual when he's loose.

I wanted to add that I do have a trace mineral block available to him but do not know how much he uses it.

Hello PRU,
Before the bloodwork a good physical exam should be done then if the exam suggests further information is needed the bloodwork could be done at that time.
