I have a 9 month old weanling Medicine hat paint. She has a super pink nose. In a matter of days she went from her nose getting a little burnt to full blown nasty sunburn with crusting and very painful. I put sunscreen on her and got one of the fly masks that cover the nose. I also put desitin on her nose. Yesterday I noticed that her lymph nodes under her chin were swollen and tight. I took her temp it was 101.1 she is acting normal, eating drinking so I took her temp again today and its 101.2 she is still acting normal, eating and hanging out. She has no cough, no nasal discharge. I am going to take her to the vet tomorrow but am going to go back down and check on her in a little while. Should I be super concerned and take her right away in the morning or would waiting until after I get off work be fine? And could this just be some kind of reaction to the sunburn? What else can I do to make her more comfortable with the sunburn?
THANKS! Cindy

Hello Cindy,
To assess the seriousness of a problem with your horse you should look to the vital signs. Above you mention several of them: behavior and body temperature. It would be rare for a horse with normal behavior to have serious problems but for more on this and more vital signs to assess see HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » First Aid » Taking Temperature, Pulse, and Respiration.

What did your veterinarian find today?

I talked to my vet and she said that since there are no other symptoms that its not to concerning. I took her vitals tonight and they are all within normal range. She is acting normal and eating. But lymph nodes are still swollen. If they are still swollen tomorrow after work I am going to take her to the vet on Friday. I would rather go and find nothing then have an emergency visit over the weekend.
I will let you know what happens.
Thanks, Cindy
