On Monday my 7 month old colt is having his umbilical hernia clamped. The receptionist did not mention if he would need to be off food prior to being placed under anesthesia. How long prior to surgery is he able to eat? Thank you!

Hello 4jane,
As it will depend on the anesthetic regimen used, you should call the clinic and ask. If you are unable to reach anyone to be safe withold food and water starting at 6pm the night before.

Thank-you for your quick response. The clinic is closed and I just wanted to be safe.

Hi again,
He was clamped on 12/17/12 and all seemed well until this past Saturday 1/5/13 I noticed an abdominal bulge (ventral area)directly in front of the clamp. His temp was 99.8 and he is eating and otherwise fine. I called vet who advised me to give 1/2 g bute and call back if it doesn't start to go down. The swelling is decreasing but I was curious if inflammation is a side effect from clamping, especially this late after the procedure? I also read about Dryland's and Laswonia but he has no fever or other signs of illness. Thanks so much.

Hello 4jane,
I don't use a clamp so am personally unfamiliar with side effects. Since the clamp works by causing necrosis of the clamped tissue, swelling around the clamp is probably common.
