I have a 10 yo mare who is showing a very hard swelling on the outside of her right foreleg, just below the knee. She is only lightly worked, and we are not sure exactly when the swelling became apparent. Likely after night turnout sometime in the last week. She seems to bounce back and forth between sound and slightly lame at the trot, particularly turning. It seemed to diminish slightly with a pressure wrap. She seems old for a splint injury. What could we be looking at?

Welcome Tamara,
You could be looking at a splint injury in a older horse. While working splints tend to happen to younger horses, any hard crack on the splint bone can cause a hard swelling. For more on this see HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Diseases of the Lower Limb » Diseases of the Splint Bones.
