My gelding is a 12 year old finished barrel horse. He was diagnosed 2 1/2 years ago with this problem. His left larynx "curtain" does not open at all. Other than making a loud sound, it did not affect him much. In the past 6 months he has started refusing to work, running sideways, turning circles, not giving to my commands. My vet thinks this problem can worsen over time and he needs to be scoped again. I was leaning more towards a possible ulcer. He has also started holding his head very low when I lope him and now takes most of the day to eat his morning meal. What is your opinion and can you also give me a "ballpark" amount on the cost to scope to the stomach and also repair the larynx. Thanks!

Here in New Mexico scoping for ulcer is around $150.00, but most expensive part is medicine-gastro guard. You have to treat it for 28 days $40.00 a tube per day. My daughter is a barrel racer and her previous horse had ulcer too. Its resolved after the treatment. Hope its help.

Hello Lisa,
The behavioral changes you describe do not help differentiate the two problems and it always is possible what you see is caused by other problems. As to the approximate costs they vary so much from place to place the best way to answer the question is to call the institution that will do the process for a estimate.
