My 11 month old mule got a large (1"diameter) hard nodular lump on top of his hip about 2 weeks ago. He started biting at it and it has now lost all the hair. It has decreased some in height but not diameter. It does not ooze or show any signs of infection. I could not find any signs of a warble or pit from a bite. It crusted over and he rubbed the crust off when rolling. It then appeared as a white/clear oozy slightly bloody sore until it scabbed back. Again - no signs of infection - per se. Not sure if this is a horse fly bite reaction, start of sarcoid, summer sore? I couldn't quite match all the symptoms. It doesn not appear painful and is not hot. This came up while he was on a round of antibiotic powder in his feed for an upper respiratory infection. The upper resp. infection started shortly after his vaccinations for EWT/Strangles/Rabies. We are located in North Texas. Bump

What if anything have you been treating it with? Sorry, I'm not going to be much help but was wondering if the yellow along the edges was from the sore or from meds. Is he still scratching at it? Or has it quit being itchy?

Hello DCCR,
The lump has all the characteristics of a granuloma, the bodies reaction to chronic inflammation and made up of granulation tissue, capillaries and often a white blood cell infiltrate. Infection (including summer sores), trauma, foreign body are all possible. Often surgical removal is required but this will be a decision made by the examining vet.
