Seemed fine up until about a month ago. Lip started DrOoping bilaterally. Floppy when running. We noticed two ulcers on the outer lip, one on each side. The vet saw what she thought was a lot of thistles embedded in the lip. Got some out, but some may have remained and healed over. The mare is a show quality mare. We would like very much for her to recover tone in her lower lip. She is able to eat and doesn't seem very concerned about it. Thoughts?

This thistles are likely foxtail awns (HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Colic, Diarrhea, GI Tract » Mouth, Esophagus, and Liver » Disorders of the Mouth and Teeth) and they will not heal if awns remain. If a thorough exam of the mouth shows all is healed up the cranial nerves need to be examined and consideration of some damage to the nerves of the lip (either cranial nerve 5 or 7 see HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Nervous System » Neurological Conditions Not Covered Above » Cranial Nerve Diseases) or possibly you have a very relaxed horse. I have seen such horses with floppy lips and/or ears. There are many toxic causes of flaccid paralysis (HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Nervous System » Incoordination, Weakness, Spasticity, Tremors » Diagnosing Incoordination, Ataxia and Weakness) but I don't know of any that might just affect the lip.

Thanks! I had noticed that the upper lip/ muzzle seemed big on the sides - not a common trait in an Andalusian. Yesterday when we felt it, both sides of her muzzle are very hard. Doesn't feel normal. Because she may be in foal (will be checked next week) the vet was hesitant to use steroids. She said to try Banamine orally for about 5 days and she will recheck when she comes to do pregnancy checks on our mares. Thoughts?

No the "hard muzzle / lips" does not ring any bells for me. Concerning the swelling it is the cause that is important, for more on the diagnosis see HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Swellings / Localized Infection / Abscesses » Diagnosing and Assessing Swellings in Horses
