Last Thursday night the horrible wind ripped apart the barn allowing my two mares to get to each other. One mare beat up the other one resulting in a bunch of kicks to the rib and a big one on the side of her butt. She wasn't lame, we only had banamine Thursday but picked up and started bute Friday. Vet also suggested dmso which we did until Sunday (I washed her with soap first)... The swelling on her multiple lumps have gone way down, but now there's one big hard new one ventral, same side, very bottom of the ribcage before the belly midline. Painful to touch not too warm. Mare pins ears and she never does that with other injuries.

Do you think it is a pooled seroma? I put on some Arnica gel but it didn't do much, other than keeping her on bute, what else should be done? Time? Hosing? More dmso again? Take her to the vet?
Thanks much!

Hello DD,
Without examining the swelling I cannot diagnose it. It is odd that it has come up almost a week after the trauma and so your idea of pooling of already formed fluids (serum or blood) is certainly possible but hernia and infection come to mind also. This may be a new injury. The article gives specific characteristics for different types of swelling and may help you. If you have a problem that concerns you and are uncertain what is going on it is the best indication you need to be talking with your veterinarian.
