Hi Dr. O,
My pony, Foxy, who had been o n a low dose of pergolide for first time for 7 days hadn't been eating well, lathargic and well acting drugged ,but then he developed slight stocking in three legs followed by a high fever(104). I only had doxicycline at the barn so started him on that as i couldn't get a vet out until the next afternoon. On exam, he had a heart murmur of 4/6(wasn't there when examed in march)borderline capillary refill, stocking up and high fever. the fever was responding to banamine but he wasn't eating well. Blood work showed anemia, elevated liver enzyme, deceased WBC and slightly elevated fibrinogen level. The vet removed him from the pergolide as she felt it might be a reaction. then had me switch to Trucoprim. He had 4 doses of doxycline at 35 100mg pill a dose.

Now my horse is stocking up and not eating well. No fever, yet. Foxy's fever has been gone since the 3rd dose of doxy and removing him from pergolide.

1. If this is ehrlichiosis would both horse get it-sound s more viral, right? Or could they just have been exposed to the same ticks.I had also read some where that it can be carried by mosquitos.

2. Also would Foxy sysmptoms return once on the Trucoprim if it was ehrlichiosis?

3.. Is it prudent to check Dante's blood before he goes on antibiotic for Ehrlicia. His stocking up started last night and I'm waiting for a call back from the vet.

Thanks, Kim

Hello Kim,
1) Ehrlicia could look very much like this clinically but when the second horse became involved, I agree, sounds virus. I only know of ticks as a vector for this disease Kim. During the acute phase you should be able to see the organism on the RBC's if you look.
2) Maybe not with 4 days of doxy.
3) Yes it would be prudent. Before any treatment, other than some bute, turn out and perhaps pressure bandages, I would wait until I had more symptoms, his case may not be as bad.

Thanks Dr. O.
I had the blood work done, yesterday. My pony is doing well now and the heart murmur is a 21/2 so he is recovering nicely. Dante had a slight fever but it is gone on it's own. His legs just look terrible.
