My friend sold her beloved mare and this mare recently sustained a serious injury - slicing her leg open. Apparently, the skin around the edges of the wound is dying - the body is trying to form new skin but instead it is growing proud flesh which is full of capillaries so is continually bleeding. I've attached a photo. Any suggestions on how to get this wound to heal better.Honey's leg wound

Hello Janice,
There is nothing in your post or the photo to suggest this wound is going to be a particular problem if treated properly. I want you to carefully read Equine Diseases » Skin Diseases » Wounds / Burns » Long Term Deep Wound Care and also the article associated with this discussion on granulation tissue and proud flesh. Together they will help you understand the healing process better and explain how I would take care of this wound.
