Navicular Bone Fracture in Horses
Introduction
Navicular bone fractures have been treated both conservatively and surgically in the past. Conservative treatment is frequently disappointing. Surgical correction with screws has a good prognosis but is expensive and requires some unusual equipment. While reading Northern European veterinary journal, Dr. Tracy Turner discovered a new conservative treatment for Navicular fractures. Dr. Turner has had the shoeing technique return horses to soundness in four of four cases.
Diagnosis
A typical history would be an acute onset of unilateral lameness that is sensitive to hoof testers. Though this would look much like a bruise, the lameness persists without improvement for several days. Radiographs confirm the diagnosis of a fracture and rule out other foot problems.
