Around the 22nd of Sept my one gelding came up with a snotty nose. No coughing, not off his feed, sounded a little congested when he put his head down in the bucket to eat his grain, but not when his head was up. Was acting normal etc. It cleared up for a couple weeks and its now back has been for a little more than a week. Thick snot in sometimes just one sometimes both nostrils. It doesn't smell, it is whiteish to clear in color. I rode him some this weekend and when we trotted he gave a few coughs, and one time flem/mucous came out from his mouth. And he was sneezing more than normal on the ride. But it was through lots of trees and grass so it could have been something in the air. because at home he hasn't been sneezing.

My pony also has a snotty nose now also. But no other horses who are with them. I have a Vet appt. on Wed for them both, but thought I'd see what you think.

Hello Lori,

Could you elaborate on what kind of hay is being fed and how? Example: round bales, squares, free choice etc. Is it being fed in nets, out of a bucket or off the ground?

Sorry for all the questions but it might give you some more clues or avenues to explore .

Sure he is on round bales and pasture. We have a little grass, but I still have a round bale out there with them, so they eat on it for awhile and then they graze for awhile. They are never stalled.

Come to think of it my gelding, who is only 7 yrs old, didn't have this snotty nose until we put the round bales out. Hmmm

If the bales are dusty, which is almost always mold spores, this might be possible. However I don't normally find this causes a snotty nose though the cough is consistant. If we assume both are snotty for the same reason it does sound like a bit of a head cold going through the barn. Concerning dusty hay be sure you read, Care for Horses » Nutrition » Moldy Hay, Heaves, and Horses.

Thanks Dr. O. The hay is not really dusty and its pretty fresh. Its weird how the snotty nose comes and goes. Just like today his nose was clear. And he was trotting and running in the pasture today and not a cough one. Now it looks like my other gelding is getting a snotty nose also. Just one nostril though. So is this something that time will take care of and it just has to run its course or do they need medication?? That is where I get confused.

If this is a mild cold it will just run its course. Watch for systemic signs of not feeling well as a indication for possible treatment.

One other question, if its just a cold, would it be contagious?? Because like in my earlier post, now my other gelding has a snotty nose now.

Yes colds are contagious, usually early in the course of the disease.
