I have posted before but so far we have failed to get my cobs bone spavin to fuse. He has over the last 3 years and a half years had arthtrodesis twice, several steroid injections and a treatment of tildren.

Last week he was back to the clinic for further assessment by the vet and the specialist who says distal intertarsal joint has fused fine and the tarso metatarsal joint is fusing but slowly. He was last xrayed in July, so he is to return for further xrays in January to see how it is fusing. Given all the treatment he has had I was instructed to take him home, increase his bute and work him hard.

Due to the problems of an english winter and english traffic and as a working owner(too unsafe to ride on the road and too dark after work) he is restricted to working in the arena until April. I can take him out to hack at the weekend but taking him in the trailer makes him very lame.

What exercise is best to fuse a spavin?
How much?
I normally try to get him cantering as this loosens him up and then trot a lot with little canter and a little walk. He seems happy to do poles and on occasion jump. We do a lot of transitions but circles are hopeless - he loses all momentum.

He lives at a riding school so will be getting extra work from them where possible.

It will differ from horse to horse Mrs WP but I would look for the amount of work that created a little bit of flare of increased lameness for 24 to 48 hours before returning to baseline.

Following this guideline there is no particular exercise and I would shoot for trying to get 2 to 3 days work in each week with 2 contiguous days rest.
