I have two seven-month old half-brothers who have both retained a lot of their foal hair. Midwest weather has been pretty weird this year, but all horses are putting on a good coat in preparation for winter. Both of my boys were weaned at three months (not my choice)...I bought them at four months. Weight gain has been good, no other problems other than a couple of bouts with a slight runny nose and minor cough that cleared up. Any cause for worry?

Not if your management has been excellent and they are in good health otherwise. A review of their nutrition and deworming procedures would be logical. DrO

Worming was questionable before I got them...I know they were wormed, but they were definitely not on a strict program. I have followed vet advice as to worming now, and they look to be doing well in that regard. They were weaned at three months, nutrition seemed to be adequate until I bought them at four months. Being half brothers, could it be something genetic? Right now, they are getting 3 pounds of Strategy and 1 1/2 pounds of sweet feed twice a day, along with a flake of good alfalfa hay 2x/day. They look better since they have been on this program, and have plenty of energy and mischief. Just won't lose that foal hair!!

I think it is more likely that this is more to do with the early care and suspect this will all straighten out in the spring. DrO
