Dr. O

I have been a member for 1 1/2 years but have never posted. I hope I'm in the right place? I purchased a 4 year old foundation AQHA in Sept. Had a full vet check, spent time with seller on a few occasions, found the previous owner on the internet and inquired a history as well. He checked out very healthy.

I moved him to a very dusty environment (blow dirt)in December and he constantly has his nose in it. Shortly after the move he began to cough when exercised, once he is warmed up he stops. I've read the article regarding COPD and heaves on this site as well as in a book but he doesn't really fit the criteria? Do you suppose it is the dusty environment? If so, can it lead to a more serious respiratory condition?

Also, he has a constant clear drainage from his eyes which the vet who performed the vet check stated was of no concern, Do you agree?

Welcome Lisa,
No this is not the right place as you are posting into Elizabeth's discussion. At the bottom of the list of discussions associated with the COPD article you will find a Start a New Discussion button that will allow you to start your own. But we give new posters a few mistakes to learn the system.

I would have to examine the eyes to know how concerned I might be Lisa. If no other problems where found, I would have the nasolacrimal ducts checked. For more on this see, Equine Diseases » Eye Diseases » Inflammed, Tearing, and Swollen Eyes.

When you say the environment is dusty what is the nature of the dust and what does the hay look like? He certainly sounds like a early COPD horse which can lead to a more serious condition, but this is all explained in great detail in the article on COPD.
