Discussion on Finding a surgeon? Fibrotic Myopathy

I bought a horse from a feedlot. When I took her to the vet after quarantine, he said she had fibrotic myopathy. It's her left hind. He said she probably had an accident somewhere in her past. He also said there was a surgery for it, but that the results from it weren't very good and that stretching was a better idea.

After reading online, I think he may be thinking of the older types of surgery. I'd like to know where I can find a surgeon for my horse, perhaps in Colorado. I'm in Wyoming.

Or perhaps I can show my vet some literature from the site and see if he can do it himself? I'm not sure the best way to proceed with that. It didn't sound like it was a difficult procedure, but I'm not a vet so I don't know.

She only has it on the one leg, but the compensation does affect her whole body, not only her hind end when she walks, but the neck muscle near her head on the right side is bigger, among other small things. She does drag the left toe. Anyway, anything I can do to help this mare, I'd sure like to. The actual myopathy doesn't hurt her, but it can't be all that comfy to be walking around like that.
Thanks,
Sarina

I can recommend Dr. Hendrickson at CSU. He performed the operation on my TB with an excellent outcome:
Dean A. Hendrickson, DVM, MS
Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons
Chief, Equine Clinical Services
Colorado State University

Best of luck,

I would have to second the recommendation of Wiley. Dr. Hendrickson is a great surgeon and person. I would actually recommend any of the surgeons here at CSU.

Sarina,

I hope you found some resolution with your FM surgery. Thanks to Wiley Gillmore, and horse advice..I was told about Dr. Dean Hendrickson at CSU, and DrOve from Tx. to have it done. It was a great success!! Mainly..what he emphasizes strongly..is the rehab portion starting IMMEDIATELY. I rode my horse the very next day , twice a day for 30 min at a strong walk, plus stretching. He had his surgery in June of this year, and we just returned from an endurance ride this weekend where he was rearing to go..and had no problems..and it was a hard, deep sand ride. It was my test..and he passed.

If you have any questions..post them..!! we can all help.

Good Luck!!
