Discussion on Mare - Cycling- Aggression shown when serving, pregnant and then not

Hi

I have had a 16 yr old arab mare at stud. Did not come into season for some 5 weeks after arrival. PG mare and cycled but did not appear to have normal cycle only allowed stallion to cover once. She was preg. tested positive at 18 days. At 42 days she cycled again. Re preg tested and was not in foal. PG and reserved as showed signs of cycling. Same type of season and difficult to serve.
Could you please tell me the normal hormone levels of a mare to have a guide as to hormone levels of this mare. Her testosterone levels showed elevation and some onther hormone but I cannot find copy of results and am only able to get verbal from lab.
This mare was again preg. tested at 18 days and not in foal. Owner wanted another ultra sound done at 21 days by her vet. Vet says her sees a 14 day old fetus and numerous follicles. I cannot believe this as my vet has never been wrong after 12 mares at our stud this season. I am confused as I saw the screen and nothing was showing when we scanned at 18 days. Can a mare hold sperm and egg for a considerable time. Is this possible. The owner is difficult to deal with at the best of times and I need some guide.

Hello Richard,
The normal values on progesterone change with the season and exactly where in the heat cycle the mare is. Testosterone levesl are not well regulated between labs so you must use your own labs set of normals for comparision.

If you truly have a 14 day pregnancy your first vet would not have been wrong, the vesicle would have just been to small to easily visualize 3 days prior. I have had small vesicles such that I saw nothing normal at day 14 but when the mare did not return to heat a recheck found a smaller than usual vesicle that goes on to be normal. I do not think I have ever seen one "7 days small" but I sure would not give her any PG to bring her in. Sounds like you wait and recheck in a few days to see if it is growing normal. Let us know what happens.
