  Discussion on West Nile Virus
Author Message

Hello Dr. O,
Sorry your riding holiday was postponed.

I don't know if this is the right place to ask this, but I did an entire site search for West Nile Virus with no results. I did find it under the medical dictionary, so know it is an encephalitis type virus.

Could you tell me what you know about it? It has just hit South Africa, for the first time, and our poor horses are being bombarded with viruses at the moment, probably as a result of the torrential rain this year. The land is still waterlogged and marshy.

I would therefore like to know what to look out for, what are the early symptoms. My horses are just now recovering from some obscure virus with no name, leaving red blood cells low and the horses anaemic, particularly Bellini, so are probably wide open for another virus to march in.

What with these no-name viruses, and the really high incidence of horse sickness this year, with many vaccinated horses dying, we are all exceedingly twitchy.

Many thanks,
Alexa
