It has been suggested - by another owner - that my mum's mare (21 yr old Welsh c) could have an over active thyroid. This produces an overweight and square shaped horse with a big crest - so she said. I have never heard of this in horses and can't seem to find it in an article. Am I just missing the article or is it not common?

Hyperthyroidism has not been described in the horse that I know of. It sounds more like what veterinarians commonly diagnose as hypothyroidism. Back up one and to Endocrine DIsorders for the article.
