Dr. O...I've just finished reading all the ringbone material on this site. I have a 20 year old gelding who was diagnosed with high ringbone 5 years ago. At the time my horse was diagnosed with ringbone, there was a definite ridge located on the front of his pastern. The ridge seems to have disappeared. Is this an indication that my horse's joint may be fusing? Additionally, can you provide a price range to have the joint fused surgically?

Not necessarily: the ridge may have been caused by many things and is not diagnostic for fusion. Sequential radiographs done with careful technique are the best way to tell if the joint is fusing. Surgery prices vary so greatly that I really do not have a useful figure for you, best is to check with the facilities near by. This is not an inexpensive process however and may run 2,000 to 10,000 dollars.
