My friends bred their mare who has cushings. She is not on any medication and I am worried about her baby.

Will cushings affect the foal?

There are no large surveys of the effect of Cushings Disease on pregnancy so we really do not know. Though we do not recommend breeding these mares, we have seen some mares with mild symptoms of Cushings successfully carry a foal and have not seen any problems we could attribute to the problem. If the mare is in good health otherwise I would not expect a great increase in the chance of complications. That said it would be logical (but not demonstrated) that there would be a small increase in the likelyhood of: placentitis, founder, diabetes, and maybe premature birth. These can be related to the increase in glucocorticoid-like chemicals released from the pituitary in Cushings.
