Discussion on Secondary Cataract in Pony
Author Message

Hi! I have a 13 yo Welsh pony that has been diagnosed by A&M with a secondary cataract in her left eye. She cannot see out of this eye. Apparently, she got this after being on antibiotics (according to the previous owners). The opthamologist at A&M said that there is nothing that can be done. There are apparently adhesions and degneration from this. I am seeking any new treatment in the form of laser or otherwise that might offer this pony some help and atleast give her some sort of vision. She is a beautiful and extremely well mannered pony w/a lot of potential, but I do not want to risk accidents w/children on a pony blind in one eye. Any guidance or assistance you can give me would be greatly appreciated. I would even be interested in participating in a research study. Thanks!

Hello Susan,
I know of many ponies that do a perfectly good job with one blind eye. In fact my youngest daughter learn to ride on such a packer. Just be sure when is carrying kids that she is always in a familiar environment.
