I bought a mare last year to breed. She carried the baby 356 days. I missed the birth, and when I checked on the mare, the baby was dead. Her head was out of the sack, but her body was still covered. The umbelical cord was still attached to the foal and placenta. When I talked with the previous owner, he said he lost a baby the same way with this mare. A friend of mine said that it was a good thing I missed the birth because the foal was probably already dead at delivery because the placenta had detached too soon and the baby sufficated in the birth canal.
Are some mares more prone to placenta previa? Is there some way to tell? I know they can in humans. If this is the case, is there something I can do to prevent this from happening?
I am going to try again with this mare. I have purchased a Foalert system. I am using it with another mare due in May.

Hello Robbie,
In response to your question I wrote an article on this condition as we get a lot of questions this time of year. Go to, Equine Diseases: Reproductive Diseases: Birthing Problems: Placenta Previa or Red Bag. If after reading the article and associated forum yo still have questions let me know.
