Hello. My 4-yr old mare was scoped by my vet after persistant coughing during exercise. In the barn she is fine, but as she begins to trot, she starts coughing. When we first noticed this cough it lasted only during the first few minutes of exercise. However, in the last month it has become increasingly worse.

In January of this year, I moved--with my horse--from NC to WI. The move seemed to be easy on my horse and she settled in very well to her new barn. Back in Feb. my mare had a swelling under her jaw to the left of her esophogus--large and oblong about the size of half a tennis ball. The vet was not concerned, but we took a culture for strangles just in case. It was negative. The bump eventually became smaller but never went away. It has since grown in size again (just smaller than a golf ball and just as perfectly round)and now has begun draining. Since it started draining, it is much smaller. The vet could not explain this mass though he feels it is related to the pharyngitis.

I am a little confused by all this. My vet is not overly concerned by her pharyngitis but I am still confused as to what exactly it is. My vet has started her on a 3-wk course of SMDs and we are going to go from there. Is pharyngitis curable? or at least treatable? How could the draining lump--abcess?- be related to it? Could this all be the result of allergies? Or is it likely related to an Upper Resp. infection back in Feb?

Hello Catherine,
Pharyngitis is not a diagnosis, it is a pathological description: what causes the pharyngitis would be a diagnosis that allows us to treat and prognose the condition. The submandibular lymph nodes are where some of the lymph from the pharyngeal area drains to. It certainly all sounds like a mild case of Strangles for more see the article associated with this discussion area.

If it is strangles, will the SMDs be effective or should I ask about penicillan?

The article discusses this controversial question and our opinion on it.
