  Discussion on Selenium-retained placenta
Author Message

Posted on Saturday, Aug 5, 2000 - 1:44 am:

My mare had to be hospitalized five days after foaling because of a retained placenta. I have since been told there is virtually no selenium where I live, and that many mares have this problem if they don't get a selenium supplement. Is this a fact? I have never heard of the connection between deficient selenium and retained placenta.

Hello Janet,
Yes, selenium deficency definately causes retained placents in other species and is believed to be associated with it in horses. For a more complete discussion on this see: The Horseman's Advisor: Equine Diseases: Reproductive Diseases: Birthing Problems: Retained Placenta.
